East Palestine Train Derailment Sparks National Debate on Chemical Transport Safety; Sodium Nitrite Regulations Tighten Across the U.S.
The February 3, 2023 derailment of a Norfolk Southern freight train in East Palestine, Ohio, has become a watershed moment for chemical transportation safety in the United States. The incident involved 11 tank cars carrying hazardous materials including vinyl chloride, benzene, and ethylene glycol, forcing the evacuation of approximately 2,000 residents and igniting a national conversation about the safe transport and handling of industrial chemicals.
Federal investigators later concluded that a controlled vent and burn of approximately 1 million pounds of vinyl chloride was unnecessary and produced a toxic black mushroom cloud that spread contaminants across Ohio and Pennsylvania. California enacted AB 1109 (Connolly), prohibiting the sale of sodium nitrite in concentrations greater than 10% to persons under 18 and requiring warning labels on shipping containers. The Youth Poisoning Protection Act was also introduced in Congress, aiming to restrict sales of highly concentrated sodium nitrite.
