The US caustic soda market is heading into the second half of 2026 with plenty of supply and not enough demand. According to ICIS, one major producer is back online after June maintenance, another is wrapping up a capacity expansion by year-end, and consumption across alumina, pulp and paper, and chemical sectors remains flat.

That should be good news for buyers. But here’s the catch: North American caustic soda prices are still holding near $0.31 to $0.35 per kilogram — roughly $310 to $350 per metric ton. Meanwhile, Northeast Asian material — much of it from China — trades at roughly $0.26 to $0.28 per kilogram, and Southeast Asian spot prices have bottomed out near $0.10 per kilogram.

The spread is wide enough that even with today’s elevated freight rates — Asia-to-US West Coast containers hit $7,400 per FEU this week, and East Coast rates are pushing $9,000, driven by Hormuz-related bunker fuel spikes and peak-season frontloading — Chinese caustic soda still lands cheaper than domestic contract material for many West Coast consumers.

For US buyers, the math is simple. With domestic supply expanding but prices sticky, and with ocean freight already priced in, locking in Q3 or Q4 volume from Chinese producers offers a real cost advantage — especially for buyers on the West Coast who already rely on Asian imports to balance their books.
